| Defining
and Assessing Positions of Play
Most soccer coaches would agree with the Fitba™ Training
philosophy that young players should be encouraged to play
– or at least have the opportunity to play – every
position. In order to achieve success it is essential that
the roles and characteristics inherent in each position be
broken down into clear and teachable parts so that players
can gain an understanding of the positions more rapidly. After
observing players in their respective positions during a game
situation the coach should review their performances with
them.
Outlined below are some positional characteristics that will
assist coaches with player evaluation and may also serve as
criteria for players to perform self-assessments.°

While
this guide is not exhaustive, it is a great starting point
for coaches and a great supplement to Fitba™ training.
Using this assessment guide will foster in players a stronger
sense of comfort and competence during their experimentation
with the different areas of the field. More detailed information
about all of these characteristics can be obtained by addressing
your question to info@fitba.ca
